All about me?

I have been quiet because I have had nothing to say. Today I decided I would look at what makes a narcissist.

This word is bandied about by everyone and their dog. I got curious and looked it up.

A Narcissist is an extremely selfish person overly concerned with their appearance. Well! There goes just about everyone and their dog.

There is however a more serious narcissist, this one is classed as having a personality disorder. A person who can not have normal relationships and has no concept of the needs of others. Some of these people end up criminals and can commit serious crimes like murder. Wow, poor buggers.

Ok, so I am a baby boomer and at times I have felt like I want to murder the kids and hubby. I like to look as good as I can and will spend money to do that. I also feel that I have paid my dues to society and can now relax.

I ask myself where am I different from the personality disorder?

And lo and behold I think I’ve worked it out. I care. I care about others and this world I live in and I will do what I can to help. I also share my good fortune (as well as my bad times😱). And I love my friends and family unreservedly.

I am simply selfish. Like everyone else and their dog.

So let’s not use a really sad and serious psychological term to describe what is plain old selfishness. Most, of us, have no excuse – we need to show we care – so pick one person or a cause and get on with it. Support something in our world and stop using the term narcissist to get out of doing it.

Except if you’re referring to our government and politicians. Then feel free to label them.
