Hello to whoever is reading this.

This week I have developed a mantra to keep me strong. The words of my mantra are I believe very important. Over my years of learning the art of writing I have learned (as Shakespeare did eons ago) that ”the pen is mightier than the sword.”

I have learned that a single person can impact on an important issue simply by using words. Especially the YES / NO words and of course with these words come actions.

WHAT am I talking about?

Well… For one thing, the fact that the Melbourne cup was not as popular this year. People vetoed betting (me included) on horses that can be treated so atrociously by their owners once their usefulness for amassing millions of dollars has diminished.

Animal cruelty is in my mind the worst of the human condition. I know you will say that we kill to eat – yes we do. But beating beautiful innocent animals of any sort is monstrous. Even the animals that hunt show more mercy to their victims.

It is unfortunate that humans are the apex predator with no real threats to their existence except other humans.

What controls us from our basest habits if the people we give the power to are the cruellest of us all? And how do we rectify these inequities?

I think the way we can do this is to say No – we are not going to be consciously cruel, nor let our government do so. I certainly don’t like being represented by the pseudo fascistic elements that are rearing their ugly heads in our parliaments all over the world. And to be honest I used my vote to protect the helpless- mainly out of total frustration with the two-party system we have that is under-representing the common human – I voted for the animal justice party.

My theory is let’s make the powers that be earn their power. Let’s not hand to them carte blanch powers. Let’s think about what we want from our representatives and vote accordingly, be they the liberal party or the labour party.

I digressed from the topic but somehow I have still got my mantra in my mind whilst writing this.

My Mantra is that I AM GRATEFUL…

… grateful that I live here in Australia. I am definitely grateful that the vote is compulsory. And I am grateful that, we Australians let our displeasure be known for the injustices we witness – by vetoing, voting against and closing our purses to absolute avarice ( well for the most part). I am grateful that my vote allows me the freedom to say what I wish to have noticed and possibly attended to.

I am grateful that any little protest creates a ripple effect that impacts the actions of humanity.
